Seychelles Pavilion (Indian Ocean survey) 2015 Venice Biennale
This exhibition aims to articulate and diffuse important work and research in the visual arts taking place in the Seychelles and the Indian Ocean by contemporary and historical artists born and based in the Seychelles, Mauritius, the Chagos Isles, Reunion and the Maldives.
Several of the artists work and live in the countries of their birth and others represented are based internationally in New York, Paris and London. Of the artists who were not born in the countries that they represent, I believe that their work is so specifically and universally relevant to the islands/states and countries that it would not be possible to exclude their work for this exhibition, hence its nature as a survey and a study of visual arts and historical legacies concerning and being produced in the nations chosen under the aegis of the Seychelles.
Work has also been commissioned specifically for the project, building on the oceanic and universal themes of certain pieces and artists represented.
The diffusion of this material of historical, modern and avant-garde leads to contemporary postcolonial modern practises and the global international art world at the 56th Venice Biennale 2015 (director, Okwui Enwezor).
I hope that this presentation confirms an inaugural point of departure through specific narratives that should open a discourse and study.
